CHELSEA SHOULD PLAY 4-4-2

It's been a bad start to the season for Chelsea, to say the least.

Just before they get on the pitch this weekend, I would like to discuss why and how I think Chelsea should play 4-4-2.

With the inability of Fabregas to replicate his brillant performances of last season, coupled with the overall poor performance of the team, there is a need to change tactics. Costa is always isolated whenever he gets supplies upfront. This leaves him with a number of opposition defenders who crowd him and win balls easily, or cause him to commit fouls and get increasingly frustrated. The team allows opposition enough space to run at them and find attacking passes, thereby leaving the likes of Matic and the defenders exposed. Matic has had to commit more fouls this season than he did after the same number of matches last season. 4-4-2 will limit how opposing teams find spaces and place passes, mostly in midfield. It will also allow Hazard enough freedom, and provide cover for Ivanovic if well arranged.

The ideal 4-4-2 line up for Chelsea is: Begovic; Ivanovic, Zouma, Cahill, Azpilicueta; Ramires, Matic, Fabregas, Hazard; Pedro, Costa.
I have prepared this line-up based on Jose's preferred players right now.

How will the 4-4-2 work?
Pedro is quick on the ball and a goalscorer too. He will take the pressure off Costa. He can receive balls to foot, run at the defenders, score goals and provide assists for Costa or any other forward running player. He can also provide some width and cover midfielders and full backs when Chelsea are not in possession.

The presence of Ramires on the right side will provide enough cover for Ivanovic. He will also allow Fabregas run free, thereby allowing Chelsea enjoy a direct playing style. The formation will allow Hazard swap roles with Pedro, and find options to pass the ball whenever he takes on players.

4-4-2 will ensure that Matic sits just in front of the defenders to provide enough cover and not leave them unduely exposed. With enough attacking options, Matic will not be saddled with the responsibility of providing the cutting-edge or scoring goals, as has been the case so far this season.

I believe this formation will help Chelsea return to winning ways, allow Jose rearrange the tactics of the team and help him restore a winning mentality.

Your comments mean a lot to me.
